Yak Wool Is A Great Choice For All-Season Sweaters
The evolution of Yak Wool has made it adaptable. Over thousands of year the yaks' adaptation has evolved to adapt to the extreme high-altitude conditions of the Himalayas. The Tibetan yak can be found between 15,000 and 20,000 feet, and is the highest living wool-bearing mammal of the world. The extreme conditions have allowed these amazing beasts to produce extraordinary fibers. Khullu also known as "coo-loo", is the fiber found around the neck and belly yaks. Khullu is known for its strength, durability, and antimicrobial characteristics. Khullu is considered to be the best wool. It is extremely durable, yet it retains the soft and luxurious feel. Yak wool products last for decades, particularly if they're manufactured properly. Yak wool is perfect for frequent wear because of its natural properties. We have it in our top sweaters due to its natural properties.

What Are Yak Wool's Benefits/Properties?
There are a variety of wool. Each type is distinct in its feel and function. Wool is the name for the fibers created by animals of the families goats yak, sheep, camel, and even some oxen. Wool is all crimpy, which are little natural "waves that are present in the fiber. These crimps are largely responsible for the amazing utility of wool.-Thermoregulation: As the highest dwelling mammals in the world, yak live through a big range of temperatures, and over time they developed hollow fibers in addition to crimps. This creates active air pockets that regulate temperature, insulate the yak from extreme colds, and cooling them down in extreme temperatures. This is why it's one of the best base layer for skiing clothes as well as therma john, icebreaker bodyfit, american rag thermal, under armour mens thermal leggings, thermal under layer, mens sports thermals, simms merino wool base layer, meriwool base layer, thermals for tall men, hanes thermal long sleeve shirt, and more.
Antimicrobial. Yak wool is antimicrobial. As sweat is absorbed, it moves upwards and evaporates. The active binding and isolation of bacteria is achieved by the yak's fibers. The isolation of bacteria reduces odor to the point where unwashed khullu has 66% less odor intensity than plastic-based fibers and 28% less than cotton fabrics.-Moisture-Wicking: Wool can absorb and retain up to 35% of its weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch, which reduces sweat buildup and discourages bacterial growth. Yak fiber is an excellent choice for this purpose because it is able to remove water from your skin 17 times more quickly than wool that is pure.
Durability Wool crimps have a similar structure to molecular coil springs. The wool fibers can stretch to stretch up to 50% when they are wet and 30 percent after drying. They can also bounce back to their original shape if stress is let go.

What Does Yak Wool Appear Like Compared To Other Yarns?
Yak Wool Vs Polyester: There is nothing better than polyester. The only advantage for synthetic fibers is the softness. However, this comes with cost. The fine synthetic fibers needed to make a polyester soften into the water system every wash of washing and are the primary reason for microplastic pollution. Khullu is better than cotton in almost all ways. Khullu is a better thermoregulator, and much more durable. It's very breathable, but retains odors due to its inability to wick away odors.
Yak Wool vs Cashmere Yak wool is often considered an alternative that is sustainable to cashmere. It's as soft as cashmere and is simple to maintain unlike cashmere. It is also 30 percent warmer and twice as breathable than cashmere.
-Yak Wool vs Merino: Yak wool and Merino have a lot common, and yak is almost an improved version of. It is a little more antimicrobial, a little more thermoregulating, a bit softer, and a little more expensive. Check out the best merino wool base layers for blog recommendations including ski thermals womens, black thermal long sleeve shirt, mens thermal all in one, insulated base layer pants, hanes thermal bottoms, men's waffle thermal long sleeve, madison merino base layer, mens thermals sale, starter thermal underwear, heavyweight base layer mens, and more.

How Sustainable Is Wool Yak? Wool Wool?
Wool is naturally the most environmentally friendly material for making clothing, it's biodegradable, renewable, and long-lasting. The ecological value of yak is crucial in the areas they live. Yaks are important to human life because of their ability to reuse nutrients and their the ease of their grazing. They have been linked to nomadic herders throughout the ages. Yak are gentle and grazing creatures. They have soft feet as their khullu. Additionally, they possess shorter tongues that take away only the top of the plants. Other animals that produce fiber like cashmere goats pull the grass by the roots, ruining the plains they reside in. Yak however is able to roam freely in the mountains , taking a graze. Instead of removing all the roots, they simply remove the tops of plants. Yak fiber is a sustainable wool that is suitable to graze with ease nomad lifestyle, ecological contribution.

Why Is Yak Wool Not Becoming More Sought-After?
Tibetan communities have been using yak wool for centuries. However, the emergence of cheap durable synthetics has reduced its use to ceremonial garb only. The demand for the luxurious wool has ebbed and flowed but has not caught on due to readily available alternatives such as cashmere, merino wool, and alpaca. All of which are naturally white and therefore easier to dye than the naturally brown yak. However, change is on the horizon, as the impact of overgrazing cashmere goats becomes more and more clear companies and consumers are looking for a sustainable alternative. Take a look at best best base layers for both men and women, including indera thermal shirt, macys mens thermal underwear, men's v neck thermal underwear, thermajohn long underwear, heavyweight merino wool long underwear, macys mens long underwear, polyester long underwear, smartwool base layer sizing, bamboo merino base layer, indera mills thermals, and more.

Are Yaks At Risk To Compress Their Fiber?
Every spring, yaks shed their fiber. The only thing that herders have to do in order to collect it is to clean the animals. Most of it is still taken by herders as the animal sheds. Yaks get healthier when their wool are put together. Yaks remain cool during 90degF summers by cooling off in the process of collecting khullu. Herders who are nomadic keep yaks safe from being kept in small cages or pins. They have the space they require to run and play.

Khullu And Other Types Of Yak Fiber
The Yak grows three types of wool. The first layer that is extremely fine, sits directly over the skin. The layer is often known as Khullu or yakdown. It's used to create sweaters. The transitional layer is the next layer of fur. It is a thicker layer of wool that can be used for insulation or paired with a topcoat in order to create different products. The final layer is the topcoat, which is a very coarse wool that is used to make ropes and tents. When tightly knit it will be water-proof. The yak have a long-standing history that goes back to the Pleistocene period. That means they shared land with woolly mammoths, giant sloths. The vast wild yak population was domesticated over the last 10,000 years. Domesticated yaks have the freedom to roam wild with nomadic herders in Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau. There's even a growing population of domesticated yak in the United States.
