Oookay! I haven't been on the community in a while, but here I am once more with a dilemma, at least it is imo since I can't figure it out. The connection problem isn't that other people can't connect- they can. I've already forwarded the port through my router and people have been able to play just fine, and I can as well... while I'm on the host PC itself. The issue I'm running into is now I'm hosting the server on my PC and I want to connect with my laptop. I figure it would put less of a strain on the server by doing so, but when I even load the program it obviously loads my own IP (laptop and PC share the same network) therefore thinks the server is on my laptop for some reason. In turn, that screws over the server by preventing anyone else from connecting because now the port is (I think) pointed at my laptop, which has no server running. The solution I'm aiming at for here is to be able to run the server on my PC while running the client on my laptop. I'd much rather avoid any illegal activity, so I am not going to resort to using anyone's wireless network in the remote area (though there are quite a few). Any ideas? |

Your notebook and desktop have separate IP addresses. What they share is their connection to the router. Imagine that your router has it's own IP address. This one is the address anyone outside of your network sees. Your notebook and desktop addresses should be something like 192.168.0.xxx. When your forwarding your routers port you forward it to your desktops local IP and port (which is where your server is running). Make sure the server is running with both the GAME_IP and GAME_PORT matching what your router is forwarding to. Then your clients IP should be your routers IP, the one thats supplied by your ISP. And the port should be the same as your GAME_PORT obviously. Also, make sure any firewall program you have isn't preventing your server from allowing outside connections on that port. |

Hrm... that explained a few things at least, but whatismyip.com still shows the same external IP for both. It'd not really be faster per se, but less likely to lag, because I'm only using my memory for server or client as opposed to both. I may just get someone to host the server for me, though. EDIT: Nevermind, got it to work so far. Thanks Vegeta! EDIT2: Tested on other players and sure enough it worked. My major problem was that I had the port forwarded to my external IP, which in my case didn't work. I instead forwarded it to the IP my router gave the terminal, 192.168.0.103 in this case, and reset my router. Connections were then able to go through just fine with other players connecting to the external IP. I feel pretty silly, but thanks a lot for answering my question and pointing me in the right direction. ^^ |

No problem. Just remember that any computer on your network and going through your router has it's own internal IP. No matter which computer you are on whatsmyip is only going to notice your IP designated by your ISP. A way I always use to find my IP on a specific computer along with plenty of other information is going to your command prompt (Start>>Run>>cmd) and then typing ipconfig. Your internal IP should be under the Default Gateway under whichever network adapter is connected to your router. |

If you have the external IP address in the client, and the port is forwarded correctly, the connection will go to your server. If you're trying to use the local IP, which will work if and only if you're on the same local area network (same router or what have you), you can get that through netstat as described by Vegeta |
