DX8. I find it a lot easier and more convenient to use than DX7.

I think that it's fine at Dx7, if you want Dx8 so bad, program it yourself. Thats when you know that you're truly a talented programmer.

The "program it yourself" attitude really needs to stop here. It's an open source community, share your code!

ya, and isn't it now against the rules to start a flame war?

No, it's a programming community, so go do it yourself and learn something.

Exactly.

We're not here to cater to each and every member. We don't HAVE to share our code whatsoever. While this is an open source community, the source itself is public domain. If there were some form of license saying we have to share it, then fine, but there's not and it's too late to add one. We all have a copy of the source under the public domain license. ;)

Nobody learns a thing from cut and paste tutorials.

I learned alot from cut and pasting tutorials actually. It lead me to expand on them and create more things

Most of the nubs that join here, don't learn from them. They use them, and if they find a problem, demand us to fix it for them. Instead of learning and figuring out for themselves why it messed up.

And here I was thinking the entire world would collapse if Matt and I agreed.

Me and James thought the same thing about if we agreed with each other. Apparently, the world didn't revolve around our feud and nothing happened. Kinda nice too. I rather like living. :D

Never messed with DX8, but DX7 seemed to do the trick.

You guys forget that these engines help people MAKE games, not LEARN to make games.

Playerworlds, Konfuze, Eclipse, THOSE engines help people MAKE games. Mirage Source is around to help people LEARN games. Ugh. Learn, Labmonkey, seriously.

I can kind of understand both sides of this. Nowadays when you learn to make Video Games your usually gonna learn in something other than VB6, or at least I would hope you do. Copy-Paste tutorials did the trick for me. At first, I won't lie, I never even bothered to look at the code or even try to understand what it did, but then after it caught my attention I slowly started to learn. The way I see it is, you will get people who do not care about code because not everyone likes to code, when people are first introduced to something like this they think its the greatest creation on the earth and they do their best to work with it even though they don't know it. I vote for DX7 for 2 reasons. 1) Those same people should be using Eclipse. 2) If something like DX8 was implemented into MS, an average Nub like myself who has been so used to DX7 is gonna have no idea what the heck is going on and it will just totally screw up my process of learning. Just my 2 cents.

I don't see why we should use DX7 because Eclipse does...

You will probably learn more, that is good for you. DX7 is just not used anymore, It's waaay old. It dates from 1999/2000.
Not saying that DX8 is new (it's from 2000/2002), but it supports (remember, it supports, you don't need to use the features if you don't want to) so many features that you can basically do anything with it. The code do change but it changes for better.

As I've said, the people around here fear change. I don't wanna use 8 because I just don't see the need for it in my games. 7 does everything I need and want it to do. So, no point in changing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;)

That goes against the programmer mentality. "If it isn't broken, keep programming until it is"
